Web Pointers and Tips

Two websites of interest to anyone who wonders what happens to all the stuff on the World Wide Web that "goes away."

1. The Wayback Machine, found on the Internet Archive at http://www.archive.org
This allows a user to enter the URL of any site, click "Take Me Back" and then see a listing of archived versions of that site in years past. Very handy for students of the evolution of website design, and even handier for those trying to see how history changes even as we are making it. Great fun, and a doctoral dissertation waiting to happen.

2. The Memory Hole, at http://www.thememoryhole.org
A maverick site, edited by Russ Kick, the Memory Hole has as its mission the rescuing and reposting of information removed from the web or otherwise censored. Quite a few government documents are here, as well as news stories that have been ignored or not followed by the mainstream media.

Library's Online Resources

Did you know you can read Newsweek and the New York Times online, for free, through the Library's website? How about this one...did you know you can take practice SAT tests and Civil Service exams through the Library's website? You can also get biographies on over 185,000 people, access to a medical encyclopedia and prescription drug information, book reviews, book recommendations, and an encyclopedia for kids. Get all this and more through the Library's Online Resources Page. The Library subscribes to these databases which contain information that you cannot find "on the web" in general. We subscribe to them so you don't have to! Ask a Librarian if you have any questions!
